Congress leader Rahul Gandhi, who has been asked to vacate the government bungalow allotted to him following his disqualification as a member of the Lok Sabha, on Tuesday said he will abide by the decision.
“As an elected Lok Sabha MP for the last 4 terms, it is the mandate of the people to whom I owe the happy memories of my time here. Without prejudice to my rights, I will of course abide by the details contained in your letter,” Gandhi said in a letter to the Lok Sabha Secretariat.
This comes a day after the Congress leader was served a notice by the Lok Sabha housing committee to vacate the government bungalow allotted to him by April 22.
Gandhi, who has resided at 12 Tughlaq Lane bungalow since 2005, was disqualified as a Lok Sabha MP last week after he was convicted by Gujarat's Surat district court in a defamation case.
However, Gandhi's announcement did not go down well with the opposition and Congress MP Manickam Tagore hit back at the government. "When Gandhi spoke against several corporate groups who got all the benefits under this government, his security was given to CRPF by SPG and when he spoke about 'friendship of Adani and Modi' on February 7, he was disqualified as an MP," claimed Tagore. .
“When RG spoke on March 25 about Mo-Adani... On March 27 they also want to take the house. Wah Narender baba. What else can you take from him now? Rahul Gandhi is speaking the truth and fighting for India against the wealth being gifted to Adani and making him super rich,” he tweeted.
Responding to Tagore's allegations, BJP national spokesperson Shehzad Poonawalla said that the bungalow allotted by the government was not personal property.
